A viable, safe and sustainable PHBV value chain for food packaging applications

The ViSS research project will create a new value chain around PHBV, a biodegradable biopolymer, trying to solve the negative impact of fossil-based plastics on the environment.

Europe’s plastic industry is undergoing a significant transformation. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), biodegradable biopolymers, have emerged as a promising alternative to fossil-based biopolymers.

Resilient value chain

The EU-funded ViSS project is dedicated to establishing a resilient value chain for PHBV, a PHA copolymer crafted from industrial organic residues. Due to its exceptional properties, it’s ideal to be used in food packaging applications.

Ensuring compliance

ViSS is committed to ensuring compliance with rigorous EU regulations, offering digital tools and enhancing the societal acceptance of biobased and biodegradable plastics. The overarching objective is to promote a secure and sustainable approach that resonates with both industries and consumers, creating a circular value chain for sustainable food packaging.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101081931
